The 300D Oxford weave marries comfort and durability.
The 300D Oxford weave is a lightweight polyester. While soft to the touch the Oxford weave makes this material coarse and heavy enough for encounters with branches and brush. 300D, the “D” stands for denier which is a measurement of the thickness of the material. 300D Oxford weave is a lightweight, flexible material with a clear back coating and a water repellent finish.
Nylon is strong and elastic,
but it can have issues with high temperatures and excessive drying can cause piling. For color it must be acid died which means it will have issues with bleach, fading, and urine.
Cotton is the cheapest and most comfortable of all apparel.
We all love the touch of cotton, but it’s durability is not suited for the outdoor activities of your dog. Cotton does not repel water, it wrinkles, and stains easily.
Neoprene is waterproof and holds heat.
It is much thicker and not as soft which means restricted movement for your dog. As it is exposed to the elements, gets wet, and dries it will begin cracking over time. Neoprene also tends to hold oder and stink more than fabrics
Your PUP won’t be deep sea diving and a waterproof vest is not going to keep your PUP completely dry, however a water repellent vest has advantages.
1. Repelling water means the vest is also resistant to dirt, so your dirty dog will be less dirty. Vests that hold water also hold dirt and are tougher to clean
2. The majority of your dogs natural coat will remain dry during the rainy months keeping your dog from being soaked every time she/he goes to the bathroom
3. If your PUP has an affinity for lakes and rivers then a waterproof or water resistant vest is key so your PUP is not running around with a water logged vest
Spring, summer, winter, or fall a waterproof or water resistant reflective dog vest will keep your PUP from getting water logged while providing a nice barrier for mud and dirt.
The fit is perhaps one of the most important factors when choosing your PUPs high visibility reflective dog vest. A vest that doesn’t fit properly is practically useless as it can do more harm than good. Especially if your PUP enjoys adventures in a wooded or bushy area. An improperly fitted vest can get your PUP caught and tangled in some sticky situations.
Sizing may vastly vary between brands. Where one dog may be a medium in brand A they might be a large in brand B and an extra large in brand C. The responsibility falls on you as the dog owner to fit your PUP properly. DO NOT GUESS ON SIZE!
Contact the manufacture. Any company worth doing business with will gladly accommodate you to make sure your dog has the right size. A reflective vest is a safety product. A company that cares about your dogs safety will make sure your dog is in the right size vest.
Visibility is important for both day and night. Bright colored vests such as orange and yellow offer great day time visibility. Both colors also make for great winter vests as they stand out in wooded and bushy areas as well as on the streets of suburbia.
The entire vest will not be reflective and it doesn’t need to be. To get the best comfort and visibility the vest will be made out of a durable and flexible material like 300D Oxford Weave with reflectivity on it. Look for a vest lined with reflective piping/strips and a large reflective graphic or logo of some kind.
You may be able to find reflective dog vests for $6-$12, but, remember, you get what you pay for. A quality vest will be a little more expensive. You can expect to pay between $15-$24 for a high quality reflective dog vest. Reviews on cheaper vests can be misleading, because the majority of dog owners who buy cheap vests do not use the vest very often. A vest used only on occasion may very well last for years, but that is not because it is durable.
Think about the clothing you buy for yourself. Not many of us wear the same shirt every single day. If we did that shirt would likely not last very long. Dog owners who buy a higher quality reflective dog vest tend to be daily users. They may replace their dog vest each year, but they also get much more use out of it in one year than others get in a lifetime with a cheaper vest.
If you are rarely going to use it then you could opt for a cheap lower quality reflective vest. If you want a high quality reflective dog vest then invest a few more dollars to put your PUP in the quality and durability they deserve.
Last, but definitely not least, consider the seller. Here are a few questions easily found online that can help in your decision:
• Are they an established seller?
• Are they available on Amazon AND do they have a professional website? Websites are easy to build these days, so if the seller has not even attempted to establish a professional online presence then where else might they be cutting corners?
• Do they have enough positive reviews to show that customers trust their reflective dog vest?
• What does their Facebook or Instagram following look like? Are other dog lovers and their dogs actually using this product?
• Do they have any type of guarantee? It is always nice to buy from a company that stands behind their product.
