Backyard BBQ & Party Hazards to Watch Out For!

A little review of these known hazards can save your PUPs life, or at the very least help you avoid some messy situations.

Foods That Are a “No-Go” for Dogs

Even a small bite of the wrong thing can lead to upset stomachs, choking hazards, or dangerous toxicity. Here are the biggest red-flag foods often found at Fourth of July cookouts:

  • Grapes & raisins – Can cause kidney failure

  • Onions & garlic – Can damage red blood cells

  • Chocolate – Toxic to dogs in all forms

  • Alcohol – Even a small amount can be life-threatening

  • Fatty meats & greasy scraps – Can trigger pancreatitis

  • Bones & skewers – Splintering can cause choking or intestinal tears

  • Corn cobs – A major blockage risk if swallowed

Even well-meaning guests might think they’re being kind by sharing “just a bite” of hot dog or burger — but these foods can easily upset your PUP’s stomach or worse. Let guests know in advance that your dog’s on a strict holiday diet.

Grill and Fire Safety

Grills are a major attraction for curious dogs — but they’re also packed with potential hazards.

  • Hot grill surfaces can cause serious burns to noses or paws

  • Drippings and grease trays can be tempting but lead to digestive trouble

  • Charcoal ash and lighter fluid are toxic and should be kept far out of reach

  • Matches and fire starters may smell interesting but can cause chemical poisoning if chewed

If your dog is allowed in the same space as the grill, make sure someone is always on watch. Or better yet, set up a safe, shaded space away from the cooking area where your dog can still see the action without getting too close.

Decor, Glow, and Party Dangers

It’s not just the food — party accessories can pose risks too.

  • Glow sticks or glow jewelry – Mildly toxic if punctured and ingested

  • Sparklers and fireworks debris – Sharp and potentially laced with chemicals

  • Citronella candles or torches – Can irritate lungs or upset tummies if licked

Curious pups often explore with their mouths. Keep decorations and party supplies out of reach, and do a quick sweep after the festivities to make sure nothing dangerous was left behind.

🧡 Pro move: Give your dog their own frozen treat or puzzle feeder during the party. It keeps them occupied, mentally stimulated, and away from the grill zone — and they’ll feel like part of the celebration, too.
