Heat and Hot Weather Safety for Dogs

If your PUP is anything like our Luna then this is a big one. Luna loves to chase lizards. She runs to all the spots she has ever seen a lizard continuously as soon as she is out in the yard. Luna will completely ignore the weather, so it is important for us to monitor the conditions and her activity.

Know the Signs of Overheating

Dogs don’t sweat like humans — they regulate heat mainly through panting and their paw pads. When the temperature spikes, it’s easy for them to overheat quickly, especially during exercise or outdoor events. Keep an eye out for these red flags:

  • Heavy, excessive panting

  • Drooling more than usual

  • Bright red or pale gums

  • Lethargy or stumbling

  • Vomiting or collapse (in severe cases)

If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to move your dog to a shaded, cool area immediately, offer fresh water, and contact your vet if symptoms persist. Heatstroke in dogs is a medical emergency and can be life-threatening.

Never Leave Dogs in Parked Cars — Ever

It can’t be said enough: do not leave your dog in a parked car, even “just for a minute.” On an 80°F day, the temperature inside a vehicle can soar to over 100°F in under 10 minutes — even with windows cracked. It’s not worth the risk.

If your dog can’t go inside with you, they’re better off staying home in a cool, safe space.

Keep It Cool Outdoors

Planning to spend the day outside with your pup? Here are a few simple ways to beat the heat together:

  • Stick to morning or evening walks, when the sun is lower and temps are cooler

  • Set up shade in your yard — trees, umbrellas, or pop-up tents all work

  • Provide constant access to water — refill bowls often and consider tossing in a few ice cubes for good measure

  • Use cooling gear like chill-out mats, shaded cots, or cooling bandanas that help your dog regulate their body temperature

And here’s a great test:

Check the pavement with the back of your hand.
If it’s too hot for your skin after 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

🧡 Adventure-Ready Reminder:

You don't have to compromise safety just because it is warm. At SafetyPUP XD, we build our reflective vests and gear for all-season safety. That includes summer adventures! With minimal coverage, but super visibility the SafetyPUP XD Collar, Bandana, and Leash are all great options.

Because visibility doesn’t have to mean overheating.

With just a little preparation, you and your pup can make the most of the summer sun — safely. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy every tail-wagging moment of the season.
